COMMENTARY:
A new scam came up in the real estate market. It happen on Kauai and 2 other islands that I am aware of. A buyer (scammer) put in an offer on a listing in Kapaa through a cooperating agent. The offer was accepted, proof of funds was provided and escrow was opened. He mailed a certified bank check from a non Hawaii bank for his earnest deposit. A certified check from an out of state bank is just like a personal check in Hawaii. The scammer then cancels the escrow and wants his deposit back. Escrow fortunately did not send his money back until his check cleared. It did not clear. He was trying to get an escrow check or wire from his bogus check. He wasted the agents time.
