Lihue is Kauai’s largest town and the main center or capital of Kauai. Once home to one of Kauai’s largest Sugar Mills, Lihue has been Kauai’s County Seat since 1837. Lihue means “Cold Chill” in Hawaiian and is often ranked among the top 20 cities with the highest average wind speed, at 12.5 mph, per the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).
Lihue is home to Kauai’s main airport (the Lihue Airport) and Nawiliwili Harbor, Kauai’s main seaport.  You will find the County Administration Building, Kauai’s largest Hospital (Wilcox), Kauai’s largest shopping center (Kukui Grove Shopping Center), several big-box stores as well as car dealerships, movie theaters, and restaurants all in Lihue.
Despite its development Lihue is a beautiful area, featuring mountain views, where many outdoor activities may be enjoyed. Kalapaki beach, Wailua waterfall, tropical forests along the Wailua River, and three golf courses are just a few of the highlights. There are several historical spots in Lihue including; Alekoko (Menehune Fishpond), Kilohana Estate,  Kauai Museum, and Grove Farm Homestead Museum.

There are two public elementary schools in Lihue; Wilcox Elementary School and Kaumualii Elementary School. All of Lihue is zoned to Kamakahelei Middle School and Kauai High School. Island School, a private pre-kindergarten- Grade 12 School, is located in Lihue. Kauai Community College, part of the University of Hawaii system, is also located in Lihue. The Kauai Bus, a public bus system serving the entire island of Kauai, has several stops located in Lihue.
