National Tropical Botanial Gardens – Limahuli Gardens, in Haena, Kauai
This past Sunday was a beautiful day on Kauai and I was fortunate enough to take a tour of the Limahuli Gardens inHaena. We had the whole gardens to ourselves for the day. Haena is the farthest north place to travel on beautiful Kauai.
First, we had a picnic lunch on top with great mountain and ocean views. Below is my God daughter Kayzia enjoying the sun. Then we walked along the path to see the different gardens. The plants/gardens are organized by how the plants were introduced to Hawaii. Whether they were Native (here before Polynesians), Polynesian introduced, or introduced by the plantation workers.
Kayzia loved to pick and collect flowers along the way. It felt especially good bringing her here because Kayzia’s Hawaiian roots (her mother & family) are from Haena.
It was great to learn about the Native plants of Kauai. Some I have never seen before and practically none exist on the island anymore. Haena is a beautiful place also known for its beaches. My favorite thing to do in Haena is to look for Kahelelani shells. I hope to visit Limahuli Gardens again soon!
