COMMENTARY:

I know I blog and post in my newsletters a lot about scammers but they are in full force. I was chatting with one today from Nigeria. he called a few days earlier saying he wanted to list his vacant lot in Princeville. It was early and I was walking my dog with my husband. We talked and my husband could overhear our conversation. When we hung up my husband remarked about me getting a new listing. I told him “Oh no that was a scammer.” John Smiths don’t have an accent and he didn’t ask the normal questions a real seller asks. I checked the MLS later and saw another Realtor fell for the scam as he had the lot listed for 1 day. I texted him and he told me that he just tried that on another Realtor yesterday. I texted her and she had a story to tell. The scammer sent her his id, John Smith, but he wouldn’t agree to a zoom or FaceTime call. She called him on his scam.

I decided I was going to string him along. Stringing along scammers has become a new hobby for many people. But then I decided I just didn’t want to expend the energy on him. So I told him. “I was going to string you along but didn’t want to waste my time.” I further told him he wasn’t very good at his scam and he needed to step it up if he wanted to fool Realtors. Most of us our not stupid. He then switched gears and admitted he was a scammer but he was “scared”. I cut him off and told him I’m not falling for that scam either. I then asked him where he lives. He asked me “can I trust you”? I told him “No, you don’t even know me.” But he doesn’t need to trust me to tell me where he lives. “But you can report me.” “to who?”. He told me he was from Nigeria. No surprise there. Our conversation ended and I finished this blog. The scammers are working it. Don’t hesitate to call me if you can’t tell if any real estate offering is a scam or not.
