Waimea Residential sales are normally lowest out of all the Kauai districts. Don’t let this fool you, personally I love the west side of Kauai. Nothing beats the community, Polihale beach and Kokee right in your back yard. Recently for the first time I did the Awa`awapuhi trail hike in Kokee.
This hike is 3 miles in to the ridge then 3 miles out. We started in the morning around 8:00 am the trail is clear and easy to follow. Going into the hike it is all down hill and fairly easy. Once at the look out there are views to enjoy from the look out or on the ridge. We hiked on the ridge and half of the time I was crawling. The ridge is really narrow and I do not suggest walking on it if having doubts. It was an experience and there are spectacular views of Kalalau.
In this picture below is the reason why the trail got its name Awa`awapuhi. Is from the long river below, in between the two mountain ridges. “awa” meaning channel/port & “puhi” is eel. Don’t quote me on this the legend is that a large puhi (eel) swam up this stream and carved the river. The rivers shape looks like a long eel.
Hiking back was a bit more difficult because now the hike was all up hill. Plus the sun was out, luckily about half the trail is covered with shade by the tree’s and foliage. Here are some plants I picked (I think most are native to Kauai/Hawaii). Maile (which I did not pick) although I seen some on the trail are kapu (forbidden) to pick unless obtaining the necessary permits. These are wanted for their good smell and for making lei’s.
